RICKY THE MEADMAKER: Yep, I'm stuck at home too, folks.
Welcome to Ask the Meadmaker where I, Ricky the Meadmaker, answer your questions about mead making, mead drinking, mead brewing, and really any question you're willing to send to me. Our first question this week is what on earth is that? I am sitting at home - stuck at home - in this whole Coronavirus thing, making weird mead cocktails. Our next question is a good one. If I wanted to learn just one really important thing that I need to know before starting a meadery professionally, what would that one thing be? Something I wouldn't think of. I know that I usually say don't do it. That's still my advice. But a lot of people focus on the mead making, which is important, that I think having a good sense of business, and especially the federal regulations are weird, but you can get through them. Knowing the business regulations in your own state is something that I really recommend researching.
Our next question has been floating around the internet and it came up on Saturday last week at our pickup at the Mead Hall and someone said "I have a bunch of starsand at home. Thank goodness I can use that for Coronavirus." No, you can't. I don't know for a fact that it can't work. Based on the mechanism by which starsand works I seriously doubt it would be effective against Coronavirus. Or most other viruses, but please don't. They are way better options out there.

Here's a great question. What is the one thing, other than making mead, that helped me get good at making mead? It's a fascinating question. I don't know how I haven't gotten it before. I would say cooking and baking, as in working with multiple different flavors - cooking - and getting used to measuring things and being very precise and replicating recipes on the baking side.
Our last question this week is "Oh no Ricky I'm running out of things to brew. I'm running out of ingredients at home. What should I do during this crisis?" And the answer is a long, long time ago, before I was a professional brewer, I was interviewed on basic brewing radio, and back then I was stuck in an apartment in California. And I would brew with whatever I had handy and I made some cool and wacky things. So, we're going to have a link to that interview in the doobly doo. I have not listened to it in about a decade. So, I don't know what my advice was, but I'm sure it was very sound. So, experiment. Make fun things. Brew with what you can.
