The word Spritz is from German by way of Yiddish meaning "to spray or sprout." Spritzer meaning "a wine beverage with seltzer" is over half a century old!

Seltzer is also from German, incidentally, named after the Village of Selters whence came carbonated water in the mid-18th Century. The first ever carbonated water was made by Josph Priestley in Leeds, England in 1767, but it wasn't sold commercially until Schweppes got into the game in 1783.
